ATHE Level 5 Extended Diploma in Management

ATHE (The Management Awarding Body) is an awarding body that specializes in offering courses at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate level in Management, Healthcare Management and Travel and Tourism Management. ATHE is regulated by Ofqual, and students can progress into various UK University programmes on completing any qualification.

Course Objectives

The ATHE Level 5 Extended Diploma in Management is designed to highlight the knowledge and experience needed for managerial careers in various business sectors. The qualification is designed to enable entry onto University programmes in Business, and/or progression into management roles in various business sectors.

Entry Requirements

All Level 5 students are required to be at least 19 years of age. In addition, they are required to have the following:

  • A CERTIFIED copy of UK GCE Advanced Level Certificate, or an equivalent Level 4 qualification.
  • Mature students over 21 years do not have to have these requirements but should have suitable work experience of no less than 2 years.
  • A CERTIFIED copy of all Academic Transcripts

English Language Proficiency :

For students whose first language is not English, they should have an English Language Test from the UKVI approved test provider, and have achieved at least CEFR Level B1 in all four components (reading, writing, speaking and listening).

BTEC level 5 Higher National Diploma (HND) in Business

Entry Requirements

  • A BTEC level 3 qualification in Business
  • A GCE Advanced Level profile which demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or an adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C
  • Other Ofqual approved related level 3 qualifications / UK NARIC equivalent
  • An Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved FE institution
  • Related work experience
  • For students whose first language is not English, a minimum of IELTS score of 5.5 is required

Mature learners may present a more varied profile of achievement that is likely to include extensive work experience (paid and/or unpaid) and/or achievement of a range of professional qualifications in their work sector.

Course Description

Edexcel, a Pearson company, is the UK’s largest awarding body, offering academic and vocational qualifications and testing to more than 25,000 schools, colleges, employers and other places of learning in the UK and in over 100 countries worldwide.

Course Objectives

Higher Nationals in Business have been developed to focus on:
  • providing opportunities for learners to gain a nationally recognized vocationally specific qualification to enter employment in business or progress to higher education vocational qualifications such as a full-time degree in business or a related area
  • providing education and training for a range of careers in business such as management, administration, personnel, marketing, accounting, and law
  • developing cognitive skills of critical thinking, analysis and synthesis
  • enhancing problem solving using appropriate quantitative and qualitative skills
  • promoting the skills of identifying, formulating and solving business problems
  • formulating effective communication using a range of media
  • focusing on the development of higher-level skills in a business context

Unit Structure:

  • 1. Qualification credit value: a minimum of 240 credits. (A maximum of 30 credits may be at level 6)
  • 2. Minimum credit to be achieved at the level of the qualification (level 5): 125credits
  • 3. Mandatory core unit credit: 125 credits
  • 4. Specialist unit credit: 115 credits
  • 5. The requirements of the HNC have to be met
  • 6. A maximum of 60 credits can be centre devised or imported from other QCF Pearson BTEC Higher National qualifications to meet local needs. Level rules and mandatory core units must not be changed

There are sixteen units in total for the HND. In order to complete the qualification, the student should have accumulated 240 credits in total.
The units consist of a mixture of Level 4 HNC and Level 5 HND units taught over two years. Download Structure

Course Progression

Learners studying the HND will be able to progress to the final year of a UK degree in business or one of its specialist areas. The qualification also prepares learners for employment in the business sector. Some learners may wish to use this qualification in order to enter a specialist area of employment in the sector, where learners may work towards professional membership or study for professional body examinations.
If the course is only partially completed with at least 120 credits achieved (i.e. eight units completed successfully), the student shall be awarded a level 4 HNC Diploma in Business, the equivalent of a Year 1 degree.

Exemption Policies

Any candidate that has completed the level 4 HNC in Business will automatically be exempted from the first year units, or whichever units that have been completed. Students that have completed similar qualifications may be entitled to exemptions under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) scheme. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a method of assessment (leading to the award of credit) that considers whether a learner can demonstrate that they can meet the assessment requirements for a unit through knowledge, understanding or skills they already possess. Provided that the assessment requirements of a given unit or qualification have been met, the use of RPL is acceptable for accrediting a unit, units or a whole qualification. Evidence of learning must be valid and reliable.
